FOBP
Legal Defense Fund & Case Info Section
Friends of the Border Patrol has evaluated our previous cases with the assistance of our in-house General Counsel.
As a result of these experiences which we, as an organization learned much from, we revamped the application & contract process and
have brought in highly experienced retired law enforcement officers and legal counsels to better review cases. We launched a section
that exclusively contains case information on a number of law enforcement cases taking place around the nation some of which involve CBP/ICE.
Among the excellent attorneys we work with, we want to acknowledge: Mark Conrad, FOBP General Counsel; John Cavicchi, FOBP Associate General
Counsel; Ron Tonkin, Esq; Steve Cohen, Esq; Jack Wolfe, Esq; Mark Berkowitz, Esq; Bob Baskett, Esq; and Ed Mason, Esq. This is a dream team
of highly experienced, honorable counsels, and we thank them for defending America's officers against trumped up administrative and
criminal charges.
The case of U.S. vs. Ramos and Compean continues through legal challenges filed with the U.S. Supreme Court. On January 19, 2009, President
George W. Bush commuted their prison sentences to time served, and they will be released on March 20, 2009 if not sooner. While some continue
to focus on this sole case, other victims continue to be persecuted and need your help, including Stephanie Mohr, whose case is more
aggregious than Ramos and Compean's ever was. It's time to get her home, six years in prison for a dog bite is long enough.
Your contributions helped us expose the questionable prosecution by Johnny Sutton in the case of U.S. vs. Ramos and Compean. The results
have been competent and qualified counsels assisting their appeals, and a commutation of their prison sentences by President Bush. None of
this would have happened without our investigation and your donations making it all possible. However, your continued contributions also
ensure we continue our work of investigating cases and assisting counsels defending officers trying to do their jobs. Please make checks
payable to FOBP. We continue to raise money, which were utilized for the legal defense of law enforcement, relief, as well as other charitable
activities where needed. We can't help as many as we do without your support.
The Ramos/Compean case kept us long bogged down, which is why we had to move forward and examine cases that were brought to our attention but
unfortunately sat and waited. While the experience gained has been invaluable to a degree, many officers/agents, and families have patiently
waited for assistance. They have seen our investigations reveal patterns by DHS, DOJ, and other departments of this administration, which has
made it easier to identify similar issues in the numerous cases we continue to review, investigate, and take reports on. These patterns have
not been identified by anyone else though many are given credit for things nobody else has done since the attention was focused on the
Ramos/Compean case.
As a result of issues that solely developed with the Ramos' family, we instituted an application process that has been in place since October 2006
with contracts outlining terms between those who seek our assistance and our organization. You can read about these issues in the FAQ Section.
As a public benefit corporation our charitible activities depends on public support to help as we do not have dues paying members to keep us
financially solvent. Unlike others, FOBP does not have the luxury of double dipping from a federal agency's labor pool AND the general public.
Relief donations for all cases should only ever be temporary, not without end. That's called taking advantage of a situation. Over the course of time,
with good management of their gift donations, each victim should be able to get back on their feet and move forward. Essentially, they have to do it
for themselves, and not expect others to carry their own burden. As the old adage says, "give a man a fish, he'll eat fish for a day. Teach a man to
fish, he'll eat for a lifetime."
We are currently raising money, which continues to assist legal defense, and relief of law enforcement, as well as other charitable activities where
there is a need. We thank you for your continued support for without your assistance, we would be unable to provide the help we do.
* Note: We have posted key case details pertaining to the Ramos/Compean case as well as Brian Israel's case at the War on Law Enforcement Section.
