FOBP
Legal Defense Fund & Case Info Section
Friends of the Border Patrol is currently re-evaluating our previous cases with the assistance of our
in-house General Counsel. As a result of these experiences which we, as an organization learned much from, we are revamping
the application & contract process. We will re-launch this part of our website as the FOBP Legal Defense Fund & Case
Info Section. In the near future, we will provide information on a number of law enforcement cases taking place around the
nation some of which involve CBP/ICE.
The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals has heard the Ramos/Compean appeal and their decision is overdue. Mr. Ramos
and his family chose to go their own way long ago regarding counsel and donations and handle all matters themselves. While
our board decided late in 2007 it was time to move forward to assist a number of cases we've monitored. The Ramos/Compean
case kept us long bogged down. While the experienced gained has been invaluable to a degree, many other officers/agents,
and families have patiently waited for our assistance. They have seen our investigations reveal patterns by DHS, DOJ, and
other departments of this administration, which has made it easier to identify similar issues in the numerous cases we're
not reviewing, investigating, and taking reports on.
As a result of issues that developed with the Ramos' family, we instituted an application process that has been in place
since October 2006 with contracts outlining terms between those who seek our assistance and our organization.
FOBP paid our portion of the Compean & Ramos appeals, $30,000.00 total for both agents. We only accepting money for new
legal cases. With the exception of awaiting verdict, funds were raised between August 2006 and February 2008 on behalf
of the Ramos/Compean case, though primarily Compean as previously stated. Their appeals were fully paid in October 2006.
In this particular case, their union's national can provide assistance without the public since that's why dues were paid
by members to their labor organization. As a public benefit corporation our charitible activities depends on public support
to help as we do not have dues paying members to keep us financially solvent. Unlike others, FOBP does not have the luxury
of double dipping from a federal agency's labor pool AND the general public.
Relief for all cases should only ever be temporary. Over the course of time, with good management of their gift donations,
each victim should be able to get back on their feet and move forward. Essentially, they have to do it for themselves, and
not expect others to carry their own burden. As the old adage says, "give a man a fish, he'll eat fish for a day. Teach a
man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime."
We are currently raising money, which continues to assist legal defense, and relief of law enforcement, as well as other
charitable activities where there is a need. We thank you for your continued support for without your assistance, we would
be unable to provide the help we do.
